Crypto to Hollywood: ‘Crypto Man’ and Streaming Giants HBO and Netflix Are Embracing Crypto Culture

The cryptocurrency world will again be in the spotlight in Hollywood after a new South Korean film, ‘Crypto Man,’ went viral as the final portrayal of the late actor Song Jae Rim, who died last month.  But is this part of a bigger trend, which has already seen Netflix crypto shows and HBO crypto documentaries?

The late #SongJaeRim last work, #CryptoMan, is confirmed to be released on 15 January 2025.

MOMMY Coin on The Center Stage: Will It Help to Accelerate Crypto Adoption?

Yang Do-hyun, portrayed by the late actor Song Jae Rim in the film Crypto Man, is a young, ambitious entrepreneur who sees an opportunity in the volatile world of cryptocurrency.

Do-hyun, with his friend Ji-Woo, initially starts companies that intentionally go bankrupt to exploit these subsidies. However, his real ambition came to light when he launched a cryptocurrency venture. He developed a cryptocurrency named MOMMY, which became extremely successful.

The film presents the MOMMY coin as a groundbreaking altcoin, achieving jaw-dropping market performance. This success attracts the attention of investors and government regulators. However, MOMMY is short-lived. Its run leads to regulatory scrutiny, which is how the film explores the consequences of such unregulated success.

In the end, regulations drive massive financial crashes – much like the films’ true inspiration – Do Kwon’s Terraform Labs.

But step back for a second, forget how MOMMY crashed $34.9 billion in crypto, and consider the bigger picture – imagining how a film like this will accelerate crypto adoption.

The movie Crypto Man will not be the first film from the movie industry. The integration of cryptocurrency themes and narratives in Hollywood movies and TV shows has indeed played a role in increasing public awareness and adoption of digital currencies.

Streaming giants are taking aim, indeed, Netflix crypto shows and HBO crypto documentaries have been big business in 2024.

Titles like “Bitcoin: The End of Money as We Know It” on Netflix or HBO’s “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” explore the history, technology, and implications of Bitcoin and blockchain, offering viewers a glimpse into what might otherwise seem like a weird subject.

These films help translate cryptocurrencies, explaining their principles and potential impact in a digestible format for everyday folk.

Hollywood’s portrayal of crypto can sway public investment trends. Movies can encourage or caution potential investors by showcasing the potential and sometimes the risks associated with cryptocurrencies.

For instance, while not directly about crypto, “Inside Job” on Netflix discusses financial systems, indirectly touching on the relevance of cryptocurrencies in financial ecosystems, which might influence viewers’ investment decisions.

The narrative around cryptocurrencies in films and TV series often reflects current cultural and economic discussions. For example, shows like “The Big Bang Theory” have humorously tackled Bitcoin, making it a topic of conversation in living rooms worldwide.

This integration into pop culture further drives curiosity and acceptance among different demographics.

The buzz from Hollywood can lead to tangible effects on the crypto market. For instance, when movies or shows feature crypto transactions or stories, they can temporarily boost interest in specific cryptocurrencies, sometimes leading to price fluctuations or increased trading volumes.
